REPORTS FROM RECENT CLUB EVENTS
From 'Yachting Log' by Keith Gerson :
(This week's report benefitting from additional input from 'Pink Pantser')
So........ A real 'gumbo' of series' events for Saturday 13 June. Will 'The Red Boat' scoop two trophies?
This was the question posed prior to Saturday's sailing. Not to be !!! Read on!!!!!
The 'Grand Final' of Von Klemperer Series #5 and Brass Monkey Series #1 and #2 was held on Saturday 13 June, bringing to a close the 'off-season' sailing calendar of events. And a 'turn up' for the books it was!
The old adage to the fore once again: "It ain't over 'til it's over!"
After a glassy morning with no wind, Race Officer Fritz Von Klemperer held the briefing at 13h30 for the now (in)famous course of Start- 1- 3- 4- Centre- 6 - Finish. The light north-easterly wind edged through and was just strong enough for Fritz to start the race at 13h55.
Fritz's (always a card up his sleeve!) innovative 'water start' idea worked perfectly and this allowed him to sail on the L26 'Desiree' and enjoy the day out on the water.
After a good ( Peter M reported 'perfect') start, 'Flirt' (Peter M and Kevin Kirkman) took the lead in about 3 knots of wind. On the way up to No 1 'Flirt' sailed into a bit of a 'hole' allowing 'Knip' (Mark Patrickand Andy Arbuckle) to lead at the first mark followed by 'Flirt', 'Desire' and the Miracle of Richard and Vic Patrick. Bags up and it was 'Flirt' with a 'fancy' move on the run, sailing
around 'Knip' to lead again at No 3, sailing away to No 4, Centre , No 6 and to the Finish to take line honours. 'Knip' came 2nd and the L26 'Desiree' ( Bosun Georg Muller and friends) finished 3rd.
But it was the lone Miracle in 4th place, sailed by Richard Patrick and daughter Victoria which proved the real surprise, taking the Brass Monkey Series Trophy on handicap. Very well done.
And the Von Klemperer Series? It was 'Pink Pantser' Metcalfe taking it from 'The Red Boat' by a single point after discard ! A tough one for 'Team Red' who sailed so consistently well in all five of the VK events. Good effort, Mark and Andy. Rewards will come.
The end to a great season was enjoyed with a perfect sunset and few cold ones on the veranda and the usual post-race banter -roll on end August/beginning September for the new season. Wonder how VC Sailing will deal with the challenges of the 'World Cup' calendar ? Time will tell.

Hunter Boats - Brief Class History
The Hunter class has its foundations in about 1967, with the first "famous" boat being the
NATIONAL SQUIB, designed and finished by Oliver Lee, and moulded by the Essex Boat Company. The Squib has gone on to reach British national status with more than 800 on the water. In 1970, a chap named Michael Poland requested that the builder design a "lid" for the Squib, to enable him to sail it across the English Channel.
As Poland's other favourite past-time was hunting, the boat was named the
HUNTER 19!
Oliver Lee also designed a Squib with a lifting keel, called a
TRACER, and then redesigned the Hunter 19 naming the new boat the EUROPA.
There is also the SANDHOPPER, a Squib with bilge keels...
The Hunter 2000 is a South African derivative, having again been redesigned with new moulds being built.
The newer "F19" is a boat built by Fast Yachts, proving to be fast and tough, within keeping with the typical attributes of a vessel of the  Hunter Class.

NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO GET INTO HUNTER SAILING
                                                            Two Damn Good reasons for getting into the Hunter Fleet;
1)  One of the largest keelboat fleets in South Africa (consistently 30+ boats on the startline....49 at the SA Nationals 2007 !!!!!)
2) Most reasonably priced sailing & value for money in the Country.
You can buy a 2nd hand Hunter needing some TLC (at relatively low cost) from just R11000.
Buy a Hunter you can jump into and sail competitively, from about R20000.
Buy a front runner for about R35000.....
Or a new FAST 19 from about R60000 (available on terms too).
Go to our For Sale Page to see a choice of Yachts on offer now!

Value wake-up call:  In the UK a new SQUIB will cost you the equivalent of about R132000.
