REPORT - Brass Monkey #1 - Sunday 6 June 2010
Report by Peter Metcalfe.

Another perfect Midlands winters day at Midmar with a light N/NE wind of 4 to 6 knots for the first of two medium distance races in the Brass Monkey Series.
Five boats entered and was great to see the Changuion family on the startline on Hunter Essex Girl(s), Peter Goble / Rose Hamilton on L20 El Viente, Marius van Vuuren / Eric on Hunter Quiki, Anton Ellens on the Miracle and Rob Bell / Peter Metcalfe on Hunter Solitaire (yes, that makes it 3 weeks in a row for Mr. Bell after a 5 year layoff – has the bug bitten again!)
Race Officer Roger Eshmade set the course from a Jetty start to # 1, # 2, # 4, # C, # 6 and Jetty finish.
The wind swung to North and was a clear port bias. Rob Bell was 10 secs early and had to go around which saw Peter / Rose get away followed by Anton and The Essex Girls. A fluky beat up to # 1 saw Essex Girls take the lead followed by El Viente, Miracle and Solitaire with Quiki bring up the rear.
El Viente peeled away home as Peter had to milk his cows, but great to see him on the startline.
Bags up and a run to # 2 and then down to # 4 saw Paul / Essex Girls keep the lead followed by Solitaire, Miracle and Quiki. A beat up to # C followed by a fetch to # 6 and a short beat to the Jetty finish saw the positions stay the same.
Line honours as follows, with Anton in with a good shout on handicap on the Miracle
1. 1h10min06s Essex Girls
2. 1hr 15m57s Solitaire
3. 1hr17m0s Miracle
4. 1hr26m34s Quiki
Thanks again to Roger for the Race Officer duties and Race # 2 is on Sunday 13th June, briefing 13h30

Hunter Boats - Brief Class History
The Hunter class has its foundations in about 1967, with the first "famous" boat being the
NATIONAL SQUIB, designed and finished by Oliver Lee, and moulded by the Essex Boat Company. The Squib has gone on to reach British national status with more than 800 on the water. In 1970, a chap named Michael Poland requested that the builder design a "lid" for the Squib, to enable him to sail it across the English Channel.
As Poland's other favourite past-time was hunting, the boat was named the
HUNTER 19!
Oliver Lee also designed a Squib with a lifting keel, called a
TRACER, and then redesigned the Hunter 19 naming the new boat the EUROPA.
There is also the SANDHOPPER, a Squib with bilge keels...
The Hunter 2000 is a South African derivative, having again been redesigned with new moulds being built.
The newer "F19" is a boat built by Fast Yachts, proving to be fast and tough, within keeping with the typical attributes of a vessel of the  Hunter Class.

NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO GET INTO HUNTER SAILING
                                                            Two Damn Good reasons for getting into the Hunter Fleet;
1)  One of the largest keelboat fleets in South Africa (consistently 30+ boats on the startline....49 at the SA Nationals 2007 !!!!!)

2) Most reasonably priced sailing & value for money in the Country.
You can buy a 2nd hand Hunter needing some TLC (at relatively low cost) from just R11000.
Buy a Hunter you can jump into and sail competitively, from about R20000.
Buy a front runner for about R35000.....
Or a new FAST 19 from about R60000 (available on terms too).
Go to our For Sale Page to see a choice of Yachts on offer now!

Value wake-up call:  In the UK a new SQUIB will cost you the equivalent of about R132000.
